Solar modules generate
electricity from sunlight. They are pollution free, virtually
maintenance free, and continue to supply energy for many years of
operation.
Solar systems can be as simple as just one module, controller, and load (e.g. powering of a water pump), or more complex with several modules forming an array, with charge regulator, batteries, and a DC to AC inverter for operating standard 230Vac appliances (e.g. TV, Computer, fridge, fan, etc.). While solar power is often used independently, it may also be used in hybrid systems, i.e. in conjunction with other complementary power sources such as for instance wind turbine and generator set. This kind of system flexibility has led to solar energy being relied upon for virtually every conceivable use of electricity, from powering the rural village hut, to small agricultural irrigation systems, to sophisticated telecommunication sites. System
sizing is important, i.e. how many solar modules are needed to generate
the required energy. For this one needs to know two main things: How
much electricity will be used by the consumer and how much electricity
will be generated by a solar module. To determine these figures, i.e. as
to how many solar modules and batteries will be needed, a sizing
worksheet should be used for carrying out some basic calculations. One
should, however, bear in mind that every solar installation is unique
and affected by many factors such as weather patterns, seasonal changes,
required back-up battery capacity (autonomy), etc.
We can assist with these calculations (solar modules, batteries, inverter rating), but would need to be provided with basic information such as: Daily DC requirements (list of each DC load in Watts and daily average use in hours), daily AC requirements (list of each AC load in Watts and daily average use in hours), autonomy (number of days of required battery back-up if no or little solar energy is generated), location or coordinates of proposed installation.
